The Washable Rug - A Modern Day Hero
I love rugs. They’re brilliant. Great for adding cosiness, zoning spaces and introducing pattern or colour. As an interior designer, I speak to so many clients who are a bit nervous about using them due to inevitable accidents involving children and/or animals.
Enter the washable rug. Lots of companies have caught on to the fact that, as well as looking good, their rugs need to be practical for family life. There’s a great selection of washable rugs out there. Here are some of the best online shops and designs I’ve come across.
Ruggable
Ruggable’s rugs come in two parts - a non-slip rug pad and a lightweight, washable rug cover which comes in many different styles and is designed to fit in the washing machine.
I love this Moroccan Diamond Plush rug! It’s super cosy and would suit lots of different schemes. It comes in a range of sizes and starts at £109 for a 60 x 90cm size.
Lots of colour! I’m a big fan of the Bauhaus style - this Absida Rainbow Rug is great for a child’s room or to add a retro, mid-century vibe to a living space.
It can be toned down by using neutral or more muted colours on the walls.
For a more traditional feel, Ruggable also have a collection of vintage style rugs, like this Sarrah one which comes in four different colours - shown here in sage.
Totter and Tumble
Great for those of you with babies and toddlers. Described as luxury playmats, they’re made from memory foam and are lovely and cushioned - perfect for little knees. They’re great quality and wipeable.
There are lots of different styles and colours to choose from but I love the contemporary pattern and warm colour of the Keeper.
And it’s reversible too, with the Seafarer design on the back if you fancy a change!
Overstock
Overstock are a great option for affordable rugs and they have a huge selection of washable ones.
The abstract design of the Realife Abstract rug would add splashes of colour to a neutral scheme while maintaining a calming feel. It’s made from sustainably sourced recycled polyester fibres.
Perfect for a child’s room or nursery, the nuLOOM Larissa Machine Washable Kids Polka Dot Area Rug is great for adding colour to a neutral scheme, especially when paired with wood tones and scandi-style furniture.
They also have a wide range of more traditional style rugs like this nuLOOM Ren Machine Washable Vintage Floral Area Rug which looks equally good with traditional style decor as it does with more more contemporary or mid-century pieces for an eclectic feel.
Benuta
Another great option for tight budgets, Benuta have a wide selection of washable rugs.
The Naomi cotton rug is washable at 30 degrees and is great for adding softness and pattern to a space. Prices start at £49.95 for an 80 x 120cm size so it won’t break the bank.
They also offer a great selection of kids’ rugs, like this Bambini turquoise rug which works beautifully with a pink and grey colour scheme, warmed up with wood tones. This one is also machine washable at 30 degrees.
